Revocable Living Trusts

Avoid Michigan probate entirely. A living trust keeps your estate private, passes assets directly to your beneficiaries, and puts you in control while you're alive.

Medicaid & Long-Term Care Planning

Special Needs Planning

An inheritance left the ordinary way can disqualify a disabled beneficiary from SSI and Medicaid. A special needs trust provides for them without costing them their benefits.

Common Questions

Questions We Are Asked Most

If your question is not here, the 15-minute call is free and there is no obligation.

Do I need a trust if I am not wealthy?

Usually the wealth question is the wrong one. A trust is about control: it decides who receives what, when they receive it, and on what terms, and it carries that out without the probate court. That is worth as much on a modest estate as a large one, and often more, because a modest estate has less room to absorb delay or a distribution that lands badly.

What happens to my house if I only have a will?

It goes through the probate court. That means a public court file, a creditor notice period that has to run before the estate can close, and several months to a year before it is finished. Your personal representative also cannot sell the house cleanly until the court grants authority. A funded revocable trust transfers the same property privately and without that wait.

What does an estate plan cost?

Every plan is quoted as a flat fee, agreed before any work begins. Not an estimate that moves later. What drives the number is complexity rather than the size of your estate: a business interest, property in more than one county, a blended family, or a beneficiary who needs protection. The free 15-minute call is where we establish what your situation actually calls for.

I already have a trust. How do I know it actually works?

Find out whether a deed transferring your home into the trust was ever prepared and signed, and where that deed is now. Then pull your beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and life insurance and read who they name, because those override both your will and your trust. Those two answers tell you whether the plan does what you think it does. It is a short piece of work regardless of who drafted it.

Do you meet clients in person?

Yes. The office is at 5263 Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor and you are welcome there. Most of the planning conversation can happen by phone or video if that is easier, but your estate plan has to be signed with witnesses present, so signing is arranged in person at a time that works for you.

The Gift You Intend vs.
The Gift They Receive

How the Right Legal Tools Can Help Protect Every Dollar You Give

When your financial advisor shows you how much you can give, and when, that's only half the equation. The other half is making sure that gift actually lands the way you intend. As an estate planning attorney, my job is to build the legal framework that transforms a generous plan into a risk-mitigated, purposeful transfer of wealth.

Most people focus on the "how much" and the "when" of lifetime giving. Rarely does anyone ask: "What happens to this gift after I give it?" A check written to an adult child is a gift, but it's also an asset now sitting in their name, fully exposed to divorce proceedings, creditor claims, or simply the financial pressures of life.

The right legal structure doesn't just move your money. It moves it with intention.

Tools That Help Put Guardrails on Generosity

Irrevocable Trusts for Large Gifts

Placing assets in trust for a child's benefit lets you set terms: what the funds can be used for, when distributions are made, and how assets are protected from outside claims.

Crummey Trusts

Use the annual gift tax exclusion while maintaining trust structure. Assets stay protected rather than passing outright to beneficiaries who may be exposed to creditor claims.

Equalization Clauses in Your Estate Plan

When you help one child with a down payment now, your will or trust needs to reflect how that's accounted for, or lifetime generosity can inadvertently create family conflict later.

529 Plan Ownership Structures

When you are the account owner rather than the parent, you retain more control, and in some states, funds may be better protected from the parent's creditors.
